Although the flood in Thailand is not as devastating as in other countries,
especially when compared to the quake and tsunami in Japan earlier this year,
the sufferings of the people here are no less.
Late last year for only the southern region, the Bank of Thailand estimated
that the 12-province flood had caused Bt35.75 billion in damages, while lost
income was valued at Bt14.1 billion.
However this year it seems that much more damage had been experienced.

The Insurance Association said that damage from floods will be greater this year,
and total compensation for the whole system will be worth more than Bt1.5 billion,
as there is flooding in over 50 provinces.
Moreover, the Faculty of Science, Chulalongkorn University, via Prof Dr Thanawat Jarupongsakul, the university’s disaster studies official, said that weather patterns have changed dramatically compared to the past.
He said simulations carried out by supercomputers at the world’s leading laboratories found out that the weather condition will be more unpredictable.
“In just two months more than 40 provinces from the north to central region, especially
those located along the Chaophraya River, are facing the worst flooding in 20 years. And soon the NalGae tropical storm will move into Thailand’s northeast. By studying storm patterns in the South China Sea and the La Nina in 2011, data point out that the flooding in the southern region in the next 2-4 months (October to January) is of high concern.
There is a high possibility of the south and Hat Yai experiencing heavy rain caused by La Nina, like in 1975, 1988 and 2000.
There could also be heavy storms like in 1062 at Cape Talumpuk or the Gay storm in Chumphon in 1989 and late last year. Mudslides are also a possibility and 2011 could be another year of natural disaster for the southern region,” he said.
We all send our best wishes and as much of support we can for these victims and hope that life would return to normal for all.
