Auto China 2012 Dazzling show by automakers attracts the masses

BEIJING, PR China, 23 April 2012 --- China again proved it is the world’s most vital automobile market as the curtain went up on the Beijing Interna¬tional Automobile Exhibition 2012 featuring a grand gathering of ve¬hicles from across the globe. The Beijing International Automotive Exhibition or Auto China 2012 opens to the public with pom and pageantry that attracted almost a million visitors. To stand out in the increasingly crowded marketplace, carmakers are bringing their best and latest products to the Auto China 2012. From the world’s fast¬est Ferrari and local-made electric cars, the world’s major automakers have lined up their finest creations to woo customers in this world’s largest market. Given the gloom that has been affecting market sec¬tors of the auto world, car shows in China are increasingly figuring in every automaker’s schedules and timetables. Chinese car-makers are strutting their stuff in the biggest way ever at this year’s auto show in the Chinese Capital. Unlike previous events, this year local carmakers are marketing their models aggressively at Auto China 2012.

This year a record 1,125 vehicles from carmakers both at home and abroad are being showcased at the show, one of the top five in the world. There was also a record 120 world premieres, including 74 concept cars and 88 new-energy vehicles, amongst them are 30 pure electric cars, from 14 manu-facturers by country and region at Beijing’s newly constructed New China International Exhibi¬tion Centre at TianZhu in Shunyi district. The total exhibition area spreads across 230,000 square metres area. The increasing size and importance of the exhibition is another indication of explosive growth over the past two decades as China rose to become the No. 1 auto market in the world.

But the most impressive high-light so far was the presentation of sports-utility vehicle models, whose manufacturers are keen to tap into the potential of China’s booming SUV segment amid an industry slowdown.

The Italian sports carmaker Lam¬borghini gave the world premiere of its concept SUV Urus – its third model line - the crossover from Sant’Agata. Urus a big SUV, stretching to 4.9m in length, but at 1.6m tall it’s closer to coupe-kind than mud-pluggers. It is built on the same platform as the Bentley EXP 9F concept.

Maserati, another Italian premium-luxury vehicle brand, held the Asian debut of its Kubang SUV at the Beijing Auto Show. The concept model will be replaced by a mass-produced SUV “most probably in the second half of 2014”. Maserati’s sales in China have almost doubled over the past two or three years. This strong market performance helped China overtake Germany as Maserati’s second-largest market last year, with sales of 800 vehicles.
