automotive industry shaped up from scratch in 1961, it has
been a major element in turning Thai¬land from an agricultural
to industrialised economy. Through the past five decades,
government policies have been vital in boosting the industry’s
competitiveness. From import substitution, the industry now
contributes a large part of the country’sexport income with
annual capacity of 1.8 million units, of which over half
destined for export.
